My best three designs by far - really quite proud My best three designs by far - really quite proud of how they turned out 😂

Happy Mother’s Day!
Sadly, rented flats in Hong Kong generally come ha Sadly, rented flats in Hong Kong generally come hand in hand with ugly bathrooms. But do not despair! There are some easy and impermanent ways to transform these sad spaces, as you can see from this picture of our bathroom at home (swipe for the before). Here are a few ideas that you can action easily:

▫️Introduce furniture that doesn’t look too bathroomy; a wooden framed mirror for example, a piece of art, or a wall cabinet that isn’t mirrored, a little stool or a wooden bin.
▫️Fabric is your friend. Curtains under the sink to replace white laminate doors is a really good trick (particularly if you use a fabulous fabric like this one from @beataheuman). Also, a shower curtain hides a multitude of sins; avoid plastic ones like the plague. You can put a plastic layer on the inside and a lovely 100% linen on the outside. Or splash out on a fabulous designer fabric to draw the eye away from the shiny white tiles.
▫️If at all possible, change the lighting in the bathroom, so you can have an atmospheric option. If there is a wall light you may be able to replace with an antique brass and glass one or, failing that, make sure you have a candle on the go at all times.
▫️Give the ugly bathroom hardware some love – change the towel rail, install an eye-catching hook for a hand towel, remove the sad loo roll holder and put the rolls in a wicker basket instead.
▫️Often the floor is the biggest let down. A shiny white expanse of 30 by 30 ceramic tiles, and not the nice kind. It is so easy to install peel and stick tiles over the top, but just make sure you buy the removable ones!

Lazy Sundays at home. Recharging for a busy week Lazy Sundays at home. Recharging for a busy week ahead. Hope you are getting a chance to rest today 💛
It’s easy to flick through photos of pretty interi It’s easy to flick through photos of pretty interiors without realising what it takes to create a space like this; a small shower/powder room in an apartment in Hong Kong. Here are some of the design decisions we made, in case you are facing a renovation project, or are just into this kind of thing, like me.

▫️The calacatta marble was cut into rectangles to give the space a retro, masculine feel. We used the same stone for the skirting which wraps around the room and for a small baton detail around the shower at the height of the shower wall.

▫️The small wall avoids a floor to ceiling piece of glass, a contemporary look which wouldn’t work as well in this space. On the back of the wall is an indent for products, neatly hidden from view.

▫️The floor stone is a simple off-white marble, nothing to write home about, but made special by the pattern we created. I felt it was important to have a contrast from the calacatta marble so that it didn’t feel too heavy-handed in a small space.

▫️The tapware is from @perrinandrowe. Apart from the beauty of its design and the patinated brass, investing in high quality tapware is so important, as you need to ensure at least a 10 year guarantee. If it breaks, you have to demolish your beautiful stone to replace the in-wall elements and you just don’t want to be doing that.

▫️The wall mounted cabinet was designed for this project. The dark wood finish is used inside the cabinet too and the brass rim picks up on the tapware and the frame around the shower glass nicely. We curved the cabinet to add interest and installed a socket inside for an electric toothbrush - beauty and function, always.

▫️We had such a small space for a vanity, but this sink, in a gently veined taupe marble, made specially for this space, really packs a punch.

▫️Finally, the lighting. We used a flower-shaped ceiling mounted light and wall mounted light above the vanity from @pookylights - no ugly spotlights here!

A very hard working room at home, because all spac A very hard working room at home, because all spaces in Hong Kong need to earn their keep.

This one is a bedroom for my (grown up) children when they are home and it is also my home office. Every little thing in here has its place. Swipe to see how I organise my samples library in labelled wicker boxes and behind broderie anglaise cafe curtains on a @devolkitchens brass rail.

I really love this @farrowandball blue (Blue Ground) and so I painted it everywhere - walls, skirting, coving and ceiling - to create a cocooning feeling. This is the first time I have done a pelmet and headboard in matching cotton velvet and I love it. The pelmet also covers an ugly plastic curtain rail which is a handy trick.

I have some of my favourite fabrics in this space - @fermoie on the ottoman, @soanebritain hiding paint samples on a shelving unit and my absolute favourite @antoinettepoisson fabric on the lumbar cushion. It has black and white stripes on the back and is rather fabulous and it will shortly be for sale in my online shop. Coming soon!

Three bathrooms in one project. We selected thre Three bathrooms in one project.

We selected three strikingly different stones and paired them with statement lighting fixtures from @mullanlighting, @kellywearstler for @visualcomfort and @corstonarchitecturaldetail and with cabinetry in honeyed oak, dove grey veined marble and a spray painted off-white matte finish.

Three very different bathrooms, but all belonging in the same space.

Revisiting a project from a while ago today. It i Revisiting a project from a while ago today. It is always such fun to be challenged to transform a rented space - no flooring, no paint, no wallpaper or moving of any lighting positions - just working with what you have.

In this instance, as time was of the essence, almost every piece was sourced in Hong Kong through trusted suppliers and I have tagged them for you, as it can be tricky to find what you are looking for here.

The ottoman was custom made for this project and the @dedarmilano fabric really lifted the scheme. It works so well to make a brave choice about at least one “hero” fabric in the room and this is a great example.

If you want to see the transformation, swipe to the last slide for the “before” image.

Happy Sunday! ❤️

Yellow can be a hero colour in interiors, even add Yellow can be a hero colour in interiors, even adding a pop of it in a piece of art, or some simple flowers can make all the difference.

Here are some spaces dressed in yellow in all its forms, from muted ochre to cheerful butter tones. The first two are from my projects and the rest are images I have squirreled away in my saved folders - in the same way I used to tear images from magazines, they are a mine of inspiration.

Swipe for a burst of sunshine filled inspiration this Easter. I hope you have a wonderful sunny day 🌞

This desk was the first piece of furniture we boug This desk was the first piece of furniture we bought when we arrived in Hong Kong 25 years ago. In those days we would all go to Macau for the day and furnish our entire house with these heavy, dark wood pieces. I have gone through many moments of wanting to rid the house of them, but now I find myself attached. The desk has just always been there and so now it has earned its place in our family story.

The dining table (second pic) is also dark wood and that is an easy fix. This particular table cloth is a goodie from the @vincentvanduysen collection for @zarahome - 100% linen with a satisfying weight to it. Slightly overshadowed by the glorious snaky tablecloth on the round table by @permanent_resident - what a beauty!

More thoughts on decorating a rented space today. More thoughts on decorating a rented space today. This is the master bedroom in my home and it certainly presented some challenges.

There was no storage at all and it is too expensive to have fitted wardrobes made for a rental, so off to IKEA we went. Actually the long bank of wardrobes now doesn’t offend me at all, because of the @matildagoad handles and @ovohk_furniture tassels which are such a simple way to elevate a very ordinary wardrobe door. I have become a bit of an expert in how to configure the inside of an IKEA wardrobe, so maybe I’ll share that on my stories today if I have time to tidy them up a bit!

The other challenge was an extension of the ceiling beam running down the wall behind the bed, but off-centre, which was just too much for my designer brain to deal with, so I installed a @zarahome curtain rail and linen curtain as a canopy to cover it and hung a framed photograph in front. Swipe to the last picture to see.

As far as possible I try to get some kind of dressing table into bedrooms I design as that moment of sitting down to get ready in a dedicated, well-lit space can be a pocket of calm in an otherwise manic day. My dressing table, squeezed into a corner, has a treasured photo of my grandmother hung over it (watching to make sure I put some makeup on as she never came downstairs without hers) and an upholstered stool with storage space inside which will be in my new furniture collection.

I have some of my favourite fabrics in this room - the @beataheuman on the chair and cushion, @soanebritain on the ottoman and on the yellow cushion and the black and white ikat on the headboard which was a Sham Shui Po find.

We are lucky to have morning light in this room, captured here so beautifully by @michael.perini. It pours through the original windows, which are such a feature of this apartment, and through which we often get a view of the sunrise over the sea, which is some recompense for having to be up at sunrise to get my daughter off to school.

My daughter Freya’s room in our rented Hong Kong a My daughter Freya’s room in our rented Hong Kong apartment literally never looks like this. Not because she is untidy, but because she has a much adored pet rabbit who eats everything in sight. Usually the bedskirt is behind a wooden board, the carpet is stowed away and there are half eaten carrots and rabbit toys strewn around . You can imagine how much the interior designer in the house loves this state of affairs. But Kalulu (after the African proverb about the rabbit in the moon) is adorable and so we forgive her all of her transgressions. See the last photo for all the cuteness.

Oh, and the stripy half-tester and matching bedskirt are going to be available to buy in my online shop. Coming soon!

The website is live! It feels as though it took fo The website is live! It feels as though it took forever to build this, not just the design, the layout and the words, but every painstaking minute it took to create each of these images. From concept to full completion, a project can easily take a year or more and so the images in this website represent hundreds (thousands?) of hours of work. At times it felt a bit daunting to try to capture so many years of my creative process, but at the same time it was really lovely to revisit all these wonderful projects, as well as those that I haven’t had time to add (coming soon).

It turns out that taking a step back for a moment and realising how far you have come is a really helpful process and it makes me excited about what is to come.

Huge thanks go to my super talented photographer @michael.perini who puts so much effort and thought into every single shot and has endless patience as I move flowers an inch to the left and then back again. And to my website creator @debbymhkg who understood exactly what I was after and didn’t rest until it was perfect.

It’s quite a challenge for an interior designer to It’s quite a challenge for an interior designer to live in a rental apartment with kitchen and bathrooms installed decades ago, no storage at all and one hand tied behind your back by a huge deposit that will not be returned if you make any changes.

In this month’s Expat Living I am chatting about all of the tricks I used to get round these restrictions (the link to the article is in my bio). I have painted every wall and some ceilings, changed all the handles on every cupboard, installed vinyl flooring, replaced ugly cupboard doors with curtains, hidden plastic curtain rails behind pelmets, designed multiple bespoke pieces of furniture and storage solutions to fit awkward spaces, replaced all the lighting, hung cabinets in bathrooms… and finally, FINALLY I can walk through the door without being bombarded by all the things I haven’t yet got to. An interior designer’s home is always last on the list of places to make beautiful, but I’m happy, for now anyway.

Thank you to @expatlivinghk for the feature and to @michael.perini for the beautiful photographs of my home.

So often in Hong Kong we are presented with intere So often in Hong Kong we are presented with interesting design challenges around space. We spend a great deal of time thinking about how our clients live their lives and how they need their (often restricted) space to work for them. And it needs to look beautiful too, of course.

This kitchen is a good example of this process. A busy family needed an open plan kitchen with as much storage as possible, space for children to sit up at the island for breakfast and homework, for a larder, for the filing boxes, for the ironing board, for the wine fridge, dishwasher, a wide stove (to fit the turkey at Christmas) and all the while the kitchen is in full view of the rest of the apartment and needed to enhance, not detract from the design.

Among the countless decisions we made to balance these opposing challenges there were 2 that made the most impact I think; firstly to keep the top kitchen cabinets the same off-white as the walls (the bottom cabinets are dark grey) so that they “disappear” and the second was to create an archway into the kitchen to soften the feel of a room that can too often feel purely functional. Blinds in a beautiful @korlahome fabric in the kitchen helped with this too.

The result is a kitchen that is the workhorse of the home while also being part of the design story.

It’s possible we are slightly OTT with Christmas i It’s possible we are slightly OTT with Christmas in our home. There is barely a corner that isn’t bedazzled (occupational hazard), or a spare inch on the kitchen countertop not laden with brussels, stuffing, parsnips, cranberry sauce - all prepped and ready to go. I love this bit, after all the manic energy of the past few weeks, the family comes together for Christmas Eve lunch in Hong Kong and the pace slows for a bit as we all relish the time together. Usually I annoy everyone though, by insisting on a family photo (seen here) as it’s often the only one we get all year of the five of us.

Wishing you all peace and happiness over the next few days, wherever you may be.🎄
