So often in Hong Kong we are presented with intere So often in Hong Kong we are presented with interesting design challenges around space. We spend a great deal of time thinking about how our clients live their lives and how they need their (often restricted) space to work for them. And it needs to look beautiful too, of course.

This kitchen is a good example of this process. A busy family needed an open plan kitchen with as much storage as possible, space for children to sit up at the island for breakfast and homework, for a larder, for the filing boxes, for the ironing board, for the wine fridge, dishwasher, a wide stove (to fit the turkey at Christmas) and all the while the kitchen is in full view of the rest of the apartment and needed to enhance, not detract from the design.

Among the countless decisions we made to balance these opposing challenges there were 2 that made the most impact I think; firstly to keep the top kitchen cabinets the same off-white as the walls (the bottom cabinets are dark grey) so that they “disappear” and the second was to create an archway into the kitchen to soften the feel of a room that can too often feel purely functional. Blinds in a beautiful @korlahome fabric in the kitchen helped with this too.

The result is a kitchen that is the workhorse of the home while also being part of the design story.

We were inspired by shapes and textures from Southern African interiors, keeping the tones serene (to let the spectacular view from this home do the talking) and focussing on interest in the details. A pretty stunning @lamaisonpierrefrey fabric on the bespoke ottoman takes centre stage here, but there are lots of other wonderful suppliers featured too - the list is below for those who find this useful!

Honey-toned marble, champagne tap ware, oak cabinetry with brass pull handles, brass switches and sockets and aged brass and fluted glass wall-lights. The finishing touch and my favourite part of this bathroom is an elegant nook for candles and books, using the most exquisite piece of marble I’ve found for a while - check out that veining 🤍

It’s possible we are slightly OTT with Christmas i It’s possible we are slightly OTT with Christmas in our home. There is barely a corner that isn’t bedazzled (occupational hazard), or a spare inch on the kitchen countertop not laden with brussels, stuffing, parsnips, cranberry sauce - all prepped and ready to go. I love this bit, after all the manic energy of the past few weeks, the family comes together for Christmas Eve lunch in Hong Kong and the pace slows for a bit as we all relish the time together. Usually I annoy everyone though, by insisting on a family photo (seen here) as it’s often the only one we get all year of the five of us.

Wishing you all peace and happiness over the next few days, wherever you may be.🎄

If I were to play favourites with the rooms I have If I were to play favourites with the rooms I have designed, then this kitchen would definitely be a contender.

It is quite unexpected to find a kitchen like this in Hong Kong (although the incredible mountain view is unmistakably Hong Kong). We were channelling South African farmhouse kitchen vibes - the curves around the stove reminiscent of Cape Dutch architecture, the herringbone terracotta tiles, stone worktops, brass cabinet pulls, wooden “butchers block” work surface, curved stable door - all creating a feeling of home for my clients while still meeting all of their functional needs. Every pot and pan has a home, hidden drawers under the cabinetry offer much needed extra storage, there is a large pantry, the dogs are contained behind the stable door without being shut away….function always comes first, but here it comes hand in hand with a truly beautiful finish. Very satisfying!

The living room, dining room and hallway of a rece The living room, dining room and hallway of a recent project in Hong Kong, which I was so lucky to work on. This is not your typical Hong Kong interior, which is often quite pared back and minimal. Here we have put in place a backdrop of panelling, coving, arches, colours and finishes that all resonate with our clients’ heritage, and layered over this a glorious collection of treasures, carefully curated to celebrate them without the home feeling cluttered.

The space was a joy to design as it is blessed with incredible light in every room, but particularly as the brief (and I hope, the outcome) was so intensely personal to the family who live there. A dream job.

This was a truly collaborative effort between my client and I, bringing alive a vision she had to bring to Hong Kong an element of home. We were inspired by the shapes of the South African architecture that she grew up with, the memories of her family home, the colours and textures of the land that she loves. I hope these images, taken on my phone, give you a feeling for a unique family home in Hong Kong. Professional photos to follow!

A light-filled kitchen we recently completed in a A light-filled kitchen we recently completed in a Pokfulam residence. Lightly veined stone surfaces, with cabinets in three different textures - oak, painted and grooved - brass accents and multi-layered lighting all come together to create a fresh and elegant finish. A sizeable kitchen for Hong Kong too, so it was fun to design and style.

I took this photo with my phone camera at the Tate I took this photo with my phone camera at the Tate Britain yesterday. This woman, sitting in quiet contemplation, tiny in comparison to the giant ionic columns, bathed in golden light, stopped me for long enough to raise my phone and snap a brief photo on passing. This was the result.

I am going to print it on art paper, the kind you might use for a watercolour painting, which takes on a velvety texture when printed and frame it in oak with a small shadow line. I’ll pop it on my story when it’s done so you can see how it turned out (could take a while though, as making beautiful things for my own home comes at the end of a long to do list for other people’s homes!).

Our Bali home has been a labour of love over two d Our Bali home has been a labour of love over two decades. Built in 2004 and expanded slowly over time, it has been through various iterations of interior design (including a complete rebuild and refurbishing of half of it in 2015 when it burnt to the ground). These days I pay a bit more attention to the interiors than I used to (surprise) and just love adding bits and pieces when I’m there. This is one of the master bedrooms, in fact it is the one that burned down. We rebuilt it exactly as it originally was, as the layout and aesthetic just works for us. There is nothing quite like sleeping under that grass roof and walking out onto the balcony in the morning to be greeted by the really quite incredible view.

After demolition we plaster the walls and scribble After demolition we plaster the walls and scribble all over them, marking up lighting positions, switches, sockets and brainstorming ideas to ensure that my drawings have been understood, that my ideas are possible and that no details have been overlooked. I love working like this. Drawings, however detailed, can be open to interpretation and this way my contractor and I know for sure we are on the same page.

It is a huge benefit to me and my clients that my contractor has an eye for design and a background in structural engineering in the UK and is also pretty handy with a pen!

Under the arches. A scene from our Mid Levels res Under the arches. A scene from our Mid Levels residence. Just the most beautiful way to suggest a division between a living and dining space without actually dividing the rooms. This is often a challenge in Hong Kong, where square footage is at a premium, but we still want to enjoy different spaces in our homes. I have found a number of different ways of achieving this over the years and this is one of my favourites.

A living room for a lovely client who bought a li A living room for a lovely client who bought a life time of collected treasures to the final project - which is my favourite way to work.

Of course, the scheme was helped hugely by the wonderful rattan side tables from @permanent_resident, artwork by @_natashabarnes_ , fabrics by @antoinettepoisson @gpjbaker @ralphlauren, lampshade @thehklampshadestudio, wall lights @vaughandesigns (so beautiful when the light shines through the alabaster) and carrera marble and bronze coffee table @lanecrawford.

Some interesting design details here too, like the batons on the ceiling which add elegance I think and a pretty brass transition between the herringbone floor and its frame, although I’m realising you can’t actually see this in this photo. I’ll share a pic of this in my stories.

A snapshot from my phone taken during a recent sho A snapshot from my phone taken during a recent shoot - not a patch on the photos taken by @michael.perini (coming soon) but I wanted to test out my new phone camera!

I was so pleased with the way this stone worked out in the end. The client didn’t want marble in this family bathroom as they were concerned about potential stains caused by children. They liked the look of veined stone though, so we went for this heavily patterned quartz. It will last forever, will never stain and looks beautiful across the shower, bath and basin area. It looks particularly fantastic with yellow orchids too, it turns out (photo coming later) and yellow body soap 😀 This is why styling photo shoots is so fun, as the small addition of a pop of colour can bring a scene alive.

This is a gentleman’s bathroom for a lovely client This is a gentleman’s bathroom for a lovely client which I think is a good example of how a design evolves so well when we really listen to the brief and inject a bit of our own magic too 😁

My client wanted only white colours to begin with, clean and functional with large tiles and a huge mirror to bring as much light as possible. I advised them to add some subtle layered details to bring it alive a little - subway tiles with a slim black finger tile as an accent, high gloss dove coloured cabinetry with cute little turned wooden legs and a soft patterned tile on the floor. Suddenly a bathroom that could have been plain white has character and charm, while still fulfilling all the functional needs of the client. I actually love the slight retro vibes it gives off too.
